Some ways to overcome your discouragement

It's easy to become discouraged when it comes to fitness or health goals. With society's mindset for instant results, waiting the time it takes to reach your fitness goals can bring about all sorts of discouraging thoughts. You must remember, however, that you didn't gain your weight, nor did your muscles and joints get stiff overnight. You shouldn't expect to get healthy overnight, either.

Part of the problem may lie in looking for a shortcut in life. We miss the important lessons of the journey when we take short cuts. Weight-related problems often are linked to something other than food or lack of exercise. It could be your response to stress, lack of confidence or the habits you were raised with. There comes a time when you must rise above these things and make the choice to change. It doesn't matter how many times you've failed or how deep and dark things seem to be.

I have compiled an effective list to help you overcome discouragement and get on the right path toward your goals. Refer back to this list when you need encouragement.

Determination. I once received poster for a gift that reads, "There is no greater force in this world, than the force of a man determined to rise." Those words have served as my mantra. You can't outwardly measure determination. It's something you feed and create on the inside. Be determined to do your best, to rise higher than you thought possible.

  • Keep the faith, and believe you can do it. Then, by your actions, show you can. Speak aloud things like, "I won't stop until I'm successful." Keep a positive picture of the future in your mind, seeing it and believing it.

Have faith that it will come to pass. You will reach the goal you see in your mind. I often visualize and believe things so much I begin to feel the real life sensations; hearing, feeling and eventually clearly seeing that I reach my goal.

  • Habits. You must create habits that are conducive to success. I've heard it said that habits are the bridge between goals and success. Evaluate your current habits. Sometimes self-evaluation is painful, but feedback can be the breakfast of champions.

Find a way to soak these three steps into your consciousness. Write them down, read them out loud, and make sure you really know them.
