As I've discussed in past articles, getting started or staying with exercise can require a great deal of motivation.
One of the best ways to get and stay inspired is to make exercise a social activity. Invite a partner along for a workout or exercise with a group. If you're thinking about starting an exercise routine or just need a push, working out with others can provide the encouragement you need. Training with a partner or small group can bring many positive benefits.
We've all had those days when we would rather just drive right past the gym and head for home, but if you have a partner waiting for you, things might be different. Training with a partner holds you more accountable to your workouts.
I often suggest people include their spouse, co-worker or a friend in their workout routines. If it's your first time in a gym, a partner can give comfort and support while making sure you take those important first steps in the door. At Fontana Fitness, where we offer small group training as well as partner sessions, I notice an increase in workout intensity with partners or groups over single client sessions.
Let's face it; we are all somewhat competitive. I've observed time after time that people just subconsciously motivate one another. It's not something that ever verbally has to be said, but deep down we all want to achieve and that slight competitive undercurrent brings out the best in us.
One area we often overlook in life is just having fun with others. With the fast-paced lifestyle we live today, we don't take enough time to chat with one another and enjoy a few good laughs. Instead of grabbing a drink after work to wind down why not consider exercising with a partner or group.
Invite friends to come along and take the opportunity to positively influence each other's lives in a healthy way. Instead of taking stress home from work with you, finish your day with a partner or group activity that will help your mind and your body.
There are many benefits to be had with exercise and sometimes having a friend join us on this journey is exactly what we need. If you already know the benefits of exercise, this is an opportunity for you to show someone else what they can do to improve their health, too.
As George P. Burnham said, "I can't", has yet to accomplish anything, "I will try" has accomplished wonders."
