Dear ,

September is one of my favorites times of the year. With the start of football season and the great temperatures, I find myself filled with excitement. Be sure to pay close attention to this month's newsletter as we have several opportunities and announcements!
I want to set the mood for this month's newsletter by sharing some insights. With the Olympics now long past, can you recall what memories stick out in our mind? Sure we can all remember a few specifics, Michael Phelps and his amazing eight Gold Medals or Usain Bolt crushing world records, but what about the other events? Can you remember who won the Women's 800M? Who won the Marathon race or what about Pole-Vault? The truth is, we can't. Not to take anything away from any of these athletes, what they have done is completely amazing. Nonetheless what stands out in my mind is what they did to get there, the character that was revealed while training, words they chose and the influence they shared that makes an impression on me. Is it not true that those records will someday be broken and those medals will be stored away and eventually collect dust? See my friends, the things that last are the lessons learned and shared that come from within, thus making us Champions for Life.
Enjoy this month's newsletter and make sure you check the E-book that I have guest authored, Balanced Body, Balanced Life. Read further for more details.

Blessings,

Troy Fontana

Champions for Life
by
Troy FontanaTroy
So you say you want to look good and feel great? Do you want to be a champion for life? How does one go about doing this? Over my years as a fitness professional I have worked with people of all different skill levels, fitness levels, talents and all shapes and sizes. Out of these people some experience great success while others muddle in mediocrity. Why is this? My goal here is to share four steps to add into your life that will lead you to great success.
Be impeccable with your word. If you say you're going to do something, then do it. This is a strong sign of integrity. Most people in today's fast paced society rush from place to place and with well intentions commit to much more than they can handle. A quote that has served me well is, "If you know what you want in life, then it's easy to say no to the things you don't want in life". So, if you know you want to be healthy and fit, next time your friends call you to join them for drinks, just remember that's not going to lead you to victory. To get where you want in life you will often have to experience sacrifice, but with sacrifice comes success.
Change comes from the inside out. This is something we put a large emphasis on at our training studios. The mindset of America is to look for the next best diet or that new fat-burning pill. This is so wrong for so many reasons. Besides the numerous side effects, you're not doing anything lasting and you're missing out on what is truly good. When you experience weight loss the right way, when you sacrifice, sweat and make a long-term commitment, you build character. I always tell my clients that each drop of sweat is weakness leaving the body. Build yourself up from the inside out so you can be that solid rock you're called to be.
Go for greatness. Now that you've made your commitment it's time to give it all you've got and go for greatness. When you do something in life always give it your best. If you make it a goal to always give 100% effort you will be able to lay your head down at night knowing you succeeded. My measurement of success is just that, giving it your best. So I challenge you to be the very best parent you can be, the best friend, the best employee or best teammate. If you want to be the best in anything you will likely need to have the stamina that comes with being physically fit.
Get back up. It's said the mark of a true champion lies in the ability to get back up after being knocked down. You will undoubtedly experience minor setbacks but you must get back in the ring and take another swing. If you get knocked down seven times get up eight.
I want to encourage you to make a commitment to health and fitness today. I wish I could fully tell you how much health and fitness will change your life, but this is something you will have to experience on your own. Being healthy is not just measured by looking better. It goes much deeper than that. Enjoy the journey and it is my hope that you'll find peace and happiness along the way.

Question of the Month: How do I increase my metabolism?
by Shanti Wolfe
Shanti Wolfe
There are a number of ways to increase or "speed up" your metabolism.  I will discuss water consumption, portion control, and meal frequency.  In order for someone to speed up their metabolism the cells of their body have to be in an isotonic environment.  Basically what this means is, our cells and our fluid surrounding our cells have lots of sodium that need to be balanced out.
How we balance those cells out is by consuming the right amount of water every day.  If we drink too much water, then the electrolytes in our bodies get so diluted that cell death can occur.  If we don't drink enough water, our cells don't get full and they don't function at their full capacity because they are shriveled up.  The two other ways to increase your metabolism also have to do with what you put in your mouth. The first is portion control, which means that you should watch how much you consume at one time.  Think of our metabolism as an oil lamp, obviously we need the right kind of oil or else the lamp would be useless.  Not only that but we need the right amount of oil to keep that lamp going bright.  If we don't have enough oil(nutrients) throughout the day, the lamp will flicker and not burn very bright.  If we have too much oil, than the lamp moistens and covers the wick and we get no flame. So, its very important to get the right amount of oil throughout the day to keep that fire burning brightly.
The last factor is meal frequency, it plays into the oil analogy because the lamp is burning that oil and we need to keep it replenished.  How we do this is by putting the same amount of oil into the lamp each time so we get the perfect flame all day long.  So, to increase your metabolism remember to drink the right amount of water per day (.5 ounces for every pound of body weight), watch how much you are putting on your plate at each sitting, and make sure to consume many meals throughout the day (my personal recommendation is at least 5).

The Benefits of Playing City League Sports
Rost OlsenSo, it's been a few years since you've played organized sports. Maybe you were a high school soccer player who thought about going on to play college ball, or maybe you were that stud shooting guard who went on to play a couple years of junior college basketball but for whatever reason, life happened and took your focus elsewhere.
You still have that competitive spirit - that want to compete - but you're not 18 anymore! You don't have your high school sweetheart cheering you on from the stands, but instead a wife or husband and maybe a couple little ones who depend on you. You have enough time to get your own workouts in, but not a lot more after that. You want to get back into combat but extenuating circumstances are keeping you from re-enrolling in school and telling the old ball coach that you're ready to take your starting job back.
With your busy schedule, you should consider getting a group of friends together and playing organized sports put on by the city. Throughout the year, many cities offer the opportunity to play sports put on by their parks and recreation departments, such as softball, basketball and even flag football!
Playing organized sports - at any age, at any level - will greatly benefit those who participate. For one, the competition involved in sports pushes us, as participating athletes, farther than we would've gone without that specific element. It teaches us teamwork, and teaches us to trust those around us. Playing organized sports also teaches us discipline that we can take with us to work and other aspects of our lives.
By playing city league sports, we can get back into those good habits we developed from our old days of playing sports. Furthermore, they don't require the 3- and 4-hour daily commitment that high school and college sports demand, which makes playing more realistic with your busy schedule. And, a lot of workplaces are willing to sponsor city league teams that their employees play for, which will allow you to get back into the game without taking as much of a hit on your wallet.
One of the most important elements of any fitness program is having goals to shoot for. Many times, when we're just getting back into the groove of things with our fitness, we know we want to improve our being, but we don't know what weakness to specifically attack. Playing sports will help us find and establish our specific goals, whether we want to lose a little weight so the run from first-to-second isn't as hard on the knees, or we want to improve our coordination so we can increase our shooting percentage.
Playing sports teaches us to compete with ourselves, and motivates us to get better and continually improve. So, pick up that old ball, hit the gym, and get to work!

Ben Phillips
Ben Phillips Mozzarella Chicken Melts

1/2 tsp. garlic salt
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 T. pesto sauce
4 Kaiser buns, split
1/2 c. shredded no-fat mozzarella cheese
3 plum tomatoes, sliced

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle both sides of chicken breast with garlic salt. Spray skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium heat until hot. Add chicken. Cook 5 to 6 minutes on each side or until no longer pink in the center. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Brush pesto sauce on the bottom half of buns. Add sliced tomatoes. Place chicken on the bun. Sprinkle cheese evenly over chicken. (If desired, sandwiches may be made ahead up to this part and wrapped in foil. Refrigerate until ready to bake. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven until chicken is warm, about 20 minutes). Wrap sandwiches in foil. Bake 10 minutes until cheese is melted.
