Having the Mindset of a Champion
by
Troy FontanaTroy
How do you keep your head above the clouds and joy in your heart? It starts with mindset, which is your attitude and way of thinking. Until you figure this principle out, you may find yourself sinking, gasping for breath, especially in difficult times.
I hear people talking about the recession, the media fixated on the negative events in the world, and people consumed by fear and uneasiness. Are you tired of all this negativity? Is the weight of the world getting too heavy to carry, and have you worried yourself to sleep too many nights? Are you ready for a breath of fresh air?
Start with changing your mindset. You might say, "Yeah, but I've lost my job. Money is tight. I can't be successful in this town. It's too hard to meet anyone around here." I'm aware of the fact that the economy has slowed and times are tricky, but I promise you that thinking about it or talking negatively of it won't do you any good.
You see, our mind is extremely powerful and our body becomes trained to respond to our thinking. Your sub-conscious mind moves at an alarming speed and is in constant action. This means your sub-conscious is always moving you in a direction. Be sure it isn't moving in a negative direction.
Have you ever thought to yourself, "I should do that" then before you know it you're barraged with an onslaught of thoughts reminding you of your past mistakes, failures and reasons why you can't. It's because your sub-conscious mind is not properly trained. Just like we train our muscles we must also train our brains. You may not always be able to control the first thought that enters your mind, but you can train the second.
A few tips to help you achieve the mindset set of a victor (rather than that of a victim) are:
Surround yourself with positive people. One of the largest influences on human beings is the people with whom you spend your time. Find a group of winners; people who celebrate success and will help you to achieve the life you desire.
Read powerful books. There is an abundance of great wisdom to be shared in so many wonderful books. A few of my favorites are from authors like Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, Lou Holtz, and John Wooden.
Get your head out of the news. What good is this really doing you? Any worthwhile news will make its way to you. Don't sit in front of the TV letting bad news pour over you. Move beyond all that. It's not worth wasting your time or emotions.
Start each day with a positive quote or mantra. Set your mind in the right direction from the start. Write inspirational quotes or scripture on a 3X5 card and carry it with you, so when things get negative, turn to your card and read it, believe it and soak it into your thoughts. One of my favorites and someone I highly recommend is Rick Ivone and you can e-mail him directly to receive his daily inspirations at: rick@inspireddiabetic.com
I've been mocked for my beliefs and I've been told that I just live in this positive little bubble. I guess this may be true, but I love my bubble and honestly, there is nothing wrong with living in a bubble as long as it's the right bubble. Unfortunately the world can be down right nasty. This is exactly the reason why we all need a place, a bubble or a belief larger than this world to lean on and turn to. I add onto my shelter everyday in multiple positive ways. I'm building a place of love, abundance, joy and happiness, which can't be measured by a bank account, a car or a job. Let go of your pride, ego, fear and anger.  They will do you no good. Start taking big breaths of fresh air and think like John Wooden who said, "Things turn out best for people who make the best of the way things turn out."

Question of the Month: With the weather getting cooler, what can I do outside to maintain my fitness level?
by

With the change in seasons, sometimes we allow ourselves to get cooped up in our houses and let our workouts slack off a little bit now that our access to the outdoors is limited. We may not be able to go for that run or bike ride as often as we like, and old bad habits can make a return as a result.
Now is the time to resist that temptation and stay active! Here are a few tips to help you keep moving during this colder period of the year:
While the cool temperatures set in, make sure to layer up! Wearing layers will ensure that your muscles keep warm which will reduce the chances of cramping or injury. Also, by wearing multiple layers, you can put on or take off layers to adjust to your comfort level during your workout.
Pick up a cold-weather activity! We happen to live in one of the most beautiful regions in the world, and when the snow falls, this area becomes a powdered gem that provides many great activities within our reach. Play some pick-up football! Take that old sled out, and find a snowy hill to go riding down! After all, not only does the ride down provide a nice rush, but running up the hill will work your lower body, and running in the snow will add another element of balance and resistance.
So, bundle up, get out, and enjoy this time of year!

Caffeine - A Supplement or Drug?
by Kyrie Teel
Boot Camp Shirt - BackI went into a Starbucks once and noticed a long line of people being addressed by name, their drinks being called out and confirmed one by one.  It seemed that most if not all of the people in there were "regulars," or people who come in routinely, committed to buying the same thing, every day.  I asked myself, how could these elaborate drinks possibly be good enough for so many people to go out of their ways unfailingly, loyally  spending anywhere between 2 and 6 dollars every single day?  The answer, I later realized, is simple: caffeine.  There are differing opinions about whether it's good or bad, but let's take a look at the facts.
Caffeine, in its purest form, is a white, powder-like substance found in tea, coffee, soda, chocolate, energy drinks, over the counter medications such as Excedrin and Midol, and nowadays even gum and candy.  We could see what it looks like after the decaffeination process; what is left over is the white powder used to make caffeine supplement tablets, such as "NoDoz."  It is not regulated by the FDA but seen as a "generally safe substance."
So, what does it do?  Since it is a central nervous system stimulant it increases blood pressure, heart rate, and dopamine levels in the brain (a neurohormone associated with motivation and pleasure).  This is why caffeine is known as an ergogenic aid; it temporarily increases mental alertness and physical capacity for labor.  It is also known to increase cardiovascular endurance when used as a supplement.
Although there are some benefits to the use of caffeine as a supplement, there are many risks involved.  Perhaps the biggest problem with caffeine is its effect on sleep.  It reduces the natural sensation of being tired by blocking adenosine, which normally causes the feeling of sleepiness.  Even if you are not very sensitive to the substance, it can have negative effects on your sleeping pattern.  The half-life of caffeine in the body is about 6 hours.  For example, if you drink a big cup of coffee with 200 mg of caffeine at 4PM, at 10PM you still have about 100mg in your body. By 4AM, you still have 50mg in your system. Even though you may be able to sleep, your body may not be able to obtain the restful benefits of deep sleep. What's worse is the cycle that many people fall into in hopes of counteracting this deficit.
Another problem with it is that it is a diuretic, an appetite suppressant and a highly addictive substance.  Not only does it cause our bodies to lose water through urination, but it also masks the feeling of hunger, having the potential to cause severe dehydration and nutrient deficiency.  You don't have to have an addictive mind or personality to become addicted to caffeine.  In fact, our tolerance to it develops very quickly; it takes about five days to become accustomed to it and also for our bodies to withdraw from it.  One of the effects of continual presence of caffeine in the body is undesirable withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, headaches and nausea.
The American Heart Association says that moderate coffee drinking (one or two cups per day) does not seem to be harmful for most people. As with everything else, though, moderation is the key to healthy caffeine consumption. Although it does have some performance enhancing benefits, they might not be sufficient to outweigh its risks.
